Online Medical Coding Certificate

Medical coders review patient health records to assign medical codes to ensure the health care providers they work for are properly reimbursed for their services. The coder must carefully read the health record to determine exactly what services the patient received. The coder must also understand medical terminology, private payer policies, and government regulations for accurate coding and billing.

Medical coders are important because they ensure insurance companies have the right information and patients know their billing and payment options. Coders help to ensure bills get paid, patient data is organized, and insurance information is verified and accurately utilized.

The Certified Coding Associate (CCA) certification offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) distinguishes coders who exhibit commitment and demonstrate coding competencies across all settings, including hospitals and physician practices.

Careers in Medical Coding

Medical coders audit inpatient/outpatient health records (both paper and electronic) for appropriate ICD-9/ICD-10 and/or CPT code assignment. Coders also aid in revenue cycle auditing. Medical coders work in hospitals, physician offices, group practices, and insurance companies.
